Nostalgia: MAT Thesis Show

Below is a description of the show. In a nutshell, my show is called Nostalgia. It is a look back into my childhood when I started making comics. For this exhibit, I decided to recreate a comic I did when I was eight. You can see all the images from the show below the description, including the ones that I did when I was a child. Perhaps later I will update images of the display of the show.

Wow, I'm sorry for how long I neglected my blog. To all that look at my blog

I apologize whole-heartely. Honestly I do, its been a challenging year learning to

become a teacher. I've been struggling making new lesson plans, learning time and classroom

management strategies and trying to maintain a social life. Also a healthy lifestyle, which

is also temporary on hold.

Apart from that I did score an awesome part-time gig at the national aquarium in Bmore!

I've worked there five times and it's awesome. I feel that I am starting to become

more comfortable as a caricaturist, but I still got a long ways to go. I'm fortunate

enough to work with a lot of great people who helped me along the way.

Here are the drawings, this is from my 5th gig I just started bringing my camera, not

sure why I didn't do this in previous gigs...

Breast Cancer Show

Hey so I should've posted this a while ago. I did this gig with my

MAT buddies from MICA for the Breast Cancer Awareness Conference,

it was for a cause so I didn't charge.

Everyone there was so nice and grateful that we were doing this for them and I was

flattered. Truly, these women are the heroes and their kindness was very rewarding.

Here are some drawings I did. Everyone who participated did a fantastic job as well,

I think MICA could open up a caricature class and definitely help causes like this.

This first one wanted me to make her like J-Lo. I thought I could've done a better job,

but she loved it. That lady was really funny.

This lady looked angry, hmm oh well you can't please everyone. I don't think this one is too bad though.

Grandma and granddaughter, very happy for them. They liked their caricature,

but I think I could've done better. :/

This woman was a wild one. Q Jacqueline Joy I think she went by. She ran an organization

of clowns and carnivals. She wanted us to help her cause, I tried contacting her, but I think she's busy. Who knows maybe she will contact me in the future.

MAT Thesis and More Caricatures

So I'm starting to ink a comic I recently have finished penciling.

The project is an exploration into my childhood. I have adapted a comic I

drew in 2nd grade and done it in my style as an adult. The purpose is an effort to get

back into my naiveté state of mind and find out why I wanted to become a cartoonist in the first place. I will upload the images from the original comic soon, but in the meantime here are two

pages I've completed.

I am pretty satisfied with this page overall. The only part that my teacher,

Howie Weiss, andI discussed a little confusing was the top right corner.

I may want to later go back and do some more cross-hatching to

define space, but as for now I'm okay with how it looks.

This one disappointed me. I love how it looked when it was penciled,

but I feel that the page now suffers from sloppy inking.

My teacher told me perhaps go back to this one after you finish the rest.

He agreed that the inking took away from the page and also suggested that I may

perhaps redraw it. Oh boy, I think he's right...

This one I did for fun. It's for a friend and his band. I haven't showed him yet so I hope he likes it.

This is Karla, a receptionist at building services.

She's been wanting me to draw acaricature of her and so I finally did.

She loved it and wants me to draw her family's caricatures for christmas. I think this will be good practice for me and Karla is awesome so I wouldn't mind doing it for her.

This last one is Laura, my supervisor, in another caricature. However, the bizarre thing about this one is that she gave me a pic of her daughter as a child and wanted me to draw her as a kid not as a present adult. I thought this request was weird, but I suppose what the heck and did it anyways. It's a kinda weird caricature, but I like the colors.

Hello everybody, I've uploaded some more caricatures I've been doing this summer. I will soon bring my camera out to events to take pictures of more of my live versions because I did a couple good ones two weeks

Hello everybody, I honestly can't excuse my leave of absence. I have been tied down with finals and been doing a lot of work, but I should still upload my blog, so I apologize. Anyways, for those who read or look at my blog I posted storyboard pics for my upcoming comic, "Bug-Eye," and here are the first inks of those.....

Well that's all I am going to show now. I do have other things like model sheets and concept art i will show some day, but for now I think this will do. P.S I finished penciling half the comic so that is all I am going to work on this year and perhaps another year I will finish the rest of the strip. Heckling Hare Attempt

Hello everyone who checks this blog, I have a new post!

This post is another exercise and I promise that I will soon show updates on my comic and a few other surprises... ;)

Anyways, this exercise is taken from John K.'s website and I always wanted to do it because it looked fun to do, plus Scribner is one of my favorite animators.

Well here it is, first the construction.....

Well that's all the work I'm going to post now. I have also been doing caricatures, but I'm still in a slump with those. I feel I got to understand anatomy of the human face more. I also have one last final treat for all my readers and that is one of my favorite comics by the cartoonist Chester Gould, the guy who did Dick Tracy. I think this comic is ahead of it's time because of the loose style of the silhouettes and when I first saw this comic I couldn't believe it was Gould because most of his stuff is usually stocky and overbearing. The last 3 panels are my favorite and I enjoy how the bodies look when they are merged together, it really makes a beautiful shape.

Well that's it and next week I will have more and if you're in Baltimore come to comic con it's coming up, soon I believe, and I hear the line up is sweeeeet!

Hello. I'm still trying to figure out a way to scan some images, but for the mean time I scanned some Howie Post studies I did this weekend. Here they are...

This last image is not a Howie Post study, but a drawing I worked on last year. I'm starting to add color into it with colored pencils and I plan to finish it sometime.

Anyways I have to continue with thesis, getting back to school, yada yada and I will have another post soon, I promise ;)

Hi! I haven't posted in a while so I wanted to make a big post of stuff I been doing lately in my new sketchbook. Also I have some storyboard stuff for my upcoming comic. Anyways the first two images are copies, one from a strip howie post did and another is a disney cover.

Personally, I enjoyed doing the howie post one better not just it has less detail than the disney one, but I just thought the composition was more interesting. When I first glanced at that post panel I thought it was really generalized, but after copying it I noticed post was able to illustrate so much depth with few lines. The whole left side of the upper panel is blank and that area is what makes the composition compelling. When I copied the disney cover it did take me longer, but I feel the overall composition is just as appealing as post's.

I also did some caricatures watching movies and observing friends/family

Here is the first sketch of one of the main character's of my comic, Kip. I did this long ago please don't judge lol :P..... I also like this page b/c I made Skud's, the snail, shell look like a urinal.

Another quick sketch, 2 characters here are also in the comic Bobo and Cleft. Really, really soon I promise to upload the character studies of them for now I only have these sketches to show.

Below are some character sketches/art and also the backgrounds I made for this short. I'm still new to flash and animation and I plan to continue it in the future. This short is inspired by the early Hanna Barbara art, but I feel I need to copy some of the art in that period so I can understand the style more. I plan to make do that this week and post it on my blog soon.

Some stuff I did this summer

This summer I have been in two classes, flash animation and a Photoshop class, at FIT. Here is some work from my Photoshop class which ended about 2 weeks ago...

The shape image below is a project I thought was interesting. The class had to make a bunch of geometric shapes with the marquee tools and combine or cut them with other shapes to form one solid shape. It was required to make 10 and this is my fav one. Anyways, I like the idea of shapes and may use the them of creating, seeing, and using shapes as the overall concept my final teaching year.

This was a fun project it was to create a room...

This room is the most complete because it has the shadows incorporated in it. I think it's clustered, but I like the colors.

Next week I am going to have this walk cycle from my animation class. Here's a sneak peek of the character.

Senior Thesis Project

Hello again. Long time no post, it's been graduation and I have been with my friends helping them with projects/partying/goodbyes and I haven't upkept with my blog. I do have a lot to show, unfortunately not scanned yet. I will but for now I do have this cover for this upcoming comic I'm deciding to make called, "Bug-Eye," the title may change. I feel I don't want to give too much away yet because I have a lot of work to do to it. I will soon, btw the colors look a little muted online anyone in blogland have any hints to fix that??? PS congrats to all the MICA graduates I will be joining you guys next semester :P

Anyways I'm trying out digital inking and coloring and so far I'm not too good at it. Hello, I hope everyone had a fun Halloween, you know I did! BOO hahahahahaa? Some New Things

Hey all you happy bloggers, sorry I have not been on in awhile, but I was in the hospital and I'm feeling better so I hope y'all can forgive my absentee.

Anyways to start off I did a bg painter from a hanna-barbara cartoon, "Skeeter Trouble." I really enjoyed the colors in this one, but I put yellow on the tree and chimney because I ran outta white. I think it still looks pretty good.

Here are some drawings I did at home of some cartoon toys I had. MAgic gumball Mickey and Alvin the piggy bank.

I read a recent post of John K's talking about Smokey the "man-boob" bear and I found this one that Richard Scarry did. I have some art of Dick's that I enjoy and I will post some up some day.

Here is another bear painting Dick did and I love it. Cropped it by accident and I couldn't do anything about so silence to all those haters.

Here's some new and old caricatures. The first one is a guy I saw on the train and I'm trying to make my caricatures more funny so here was my first attempt at a new style I'm currently developing for me.

The next one is an idea the people at my work and I had for a show on adult swim. It involves Nick Manning, who is a porn star that often appears on the Howard Stern show, and in my cartoon he will be a porn star secret agent. I want it to be animated like the Clutch Cargo cartoons, but I hope I don't get sewed by Conan O'Brian because he already does stuff like that on his show. I love his show too.

Chris the librarian

Chris the librarian is always showing me lots of really interesting stuff at the library. Below is a book that has screenshots from laurel and hardy films.

The screenshots I scanned is from this gag, in which, Hardy somehow gets a paintbrush stuck to his face. Chris and I had a discussion to why we thought this part of the film was hilarious and part of it dealt with the character's mannerisms. Hardy's expressions are usually very extreme and full of anger and Laurel's expressions are dopey and unaware of the conflicts that exist in the story. The balance of these personalities create an illusion that we as viewers can picture these people existing in the real world and as a result we laugh at their mischievous behavior. Take a gander at the shots below.

I love this scene!

If this part of the story does not make sense I think I can explain what happened. Hardy fell down a chute after the sink water splashed into his face. Hardy gets stuck at the end of the chute and Laurel confusingly tries to help Hardy squeeze out. As this is happening a barrel of Shellac? also falls down the chute racing after Hardy.

Chris also showed me a really cool new yorker artist, Charles Addams, or what most people know him as the creator of the addams family. This first one was taken off his website...

I don't even want to tell you what the caption says on this one because it's such a bizarre image so just imagine.

I like this last black and white one because it's pleasant, eerie, easy to read, and the hand coming out of the record player is incredible. (I wish I had one!!)

Chris doesn't necessarily like his colored ones. I agree with him that they are definitely not as good as his black and whites, but they're not bad.

I'm not a big fan of this butterfly composition, but I love the concept that an adult man is butterfly hunting and that he is unaware about the humongous, monster butterfly is looming around the corner.

Both Chris and I liked this one.

Hey ya'll I'm in Texas right now. I'm going to upload some more stuff onto this blog when I get back to Baltimore, but for now here's a huge blog of stuff.

To start off here is a comic idea suggested by my friend Jacob, whose drawings I will show later on the blog. Jacob told me that I should make a comic about my crackhead neighbors that I lived with my sophomore year of college. Anyways here is a caricature I did of them, Dave and Gino.

Dave, the one with the glasses, was always either grumpy or retardly happy. He loved rock music and liked to drink jack bourbon, however when he drank too much he become outlandishly violent. Gino, the other guy with the weird hair, got stabbed in the face 10 times in 3 fights I think. He loved rock and country, bleh. He also liked metal and I think he really liked the band white snake, it could be a different band my buddy mike will clarify that detail. Gino always tried to be suave and a ladies man. Dave is insane, I think he was in the Navy in Vietnam and that made him crazy. I have a lot of material for these guys and they always wanted me to make them into cartoon characters, perhaps I shall. Below is some more drawings and pics of them.

This model sheet is a character I created when I was eight. His name is Bath-Time-Dog. Some people told me to make comics of him again. That is why I did this model sheet. I will try to find the original drawings of him when I was eight. Also I am going to make more model sheets of his friends. I think BTD is generic, but I may attempt a comic strip with him.

Sequential Art/ Character Development class drawings

This past three week mini-mester I did a couple of illustration work for Brian Ralph's Sequential Art/ Character Development class. This is my first illustration class that I ever taken and I really enjoyed the class and the students were both awesome artists and fun people to talk to. Brian was also a great teacher and I suggest anyone interested in illustration should take his class.

This project was an in class project called cute to brute. This project required you to create an initial cute character and turn it into a horrifying brute. This is what I did for the assignment. Overall, this project rocked and it seemed that everyone in my class was into it.

This is another in class assignment. My teacher made all the students write down two feelings on a small piece of paper and than write down two positions that required a costume to wear. I chose to draw a disgruntled drag queen. It was a silly and quick assignment.

This next character was created for the first comic book in the class. The comic book called for a character to be stranded on an island and so I decided to draw a janitor. I think he is the best and most likable character I made in this class.

This is my first comic.

These are the characters for my second comic. This assignment required you to make two odd roommates so I chose to draw a mad scientist living with a cheerleader.

This is my second comic in the class, "The roommate Comic" The drawings in this comic have more dynamic perspectives than the "head-on" perspectives I had in the first comic. However, I still had the trouble of making my panels too small and therefore hard to read in certain areas. Also the second page had to much space in between the panels.

These are the characters I did for my third comic. I like them, but their name was already taken by a movie so I will have to change that.

Here is my third comic for "the stranger" assignment. I think overall this nicely done comic.

This is the last comic I did in the class. It was a two day assignment and I worked with Zak Greene who is listed on my links at right-hand corner of my blog. Zak is a good guy a geek like me and a funny guy to talk to. We decided, based on our personalities, that I would draw the good guy, the procrastinator, and he would draw the villain, the sloth. My panels are the ones to the left.

Well that's all the work I did for Brian Ralph's class. Awesome times and my only regret was that I wished it was longer because playing SSMB on the projector was incredible. People in blogland stay tooned because I am going to post some of my prints next post and have some more paintings/drawings the post after.

George Liquor Sketches

So I just got out of work and did two drawings of george in honor of him getting his new show. I will work on these later during the weekend because I have some finals to take care of.

This last picture is not George, but my downstairs neighbor I had last year, Dave, who reminded of George in not only looks, but in his American spirit.

Once this week is over I am going to post a bunch of new posts and congratulations John on your new show!

Bullwinkle sketches

Here are some of my first attempts at copying bullwinkle. I found drawing in this style very difficult and I think it is because this style appears flat, but actually all the forms are 3-dimensional. The reason why people feel that these pictures are flat is because all the forms are simplified. I can't explain it all in words so I wrote a couple of observations on the drawings to understand the complexity of this style. Anywhere there is a NS label in the drawing that just stands for negative space. I feel that the forms and negative spaces in these drawings are wacky and create really cool abstract shapes.

This drawing was really hard to draw and I'm going to make another attempt at it after I read John's blog about the construction of these characters.

In conclusion, I will like to thank Blambro from Far Rock for getting my drawings scanned.

These first two images are done for this guy Wally who hired me to illustrate his gags for a single panel comic.

Here are some hand exercises I copied from Preston Blair's animation book. I did these to understand simple hand gestures and shapes.
